New Year, New Game: Top 5 Tips for Pickleball Players in 2025

2025 is here, and it’s time to take our pickleball game to the next level! Whether you’re just starting out or competing in high-level tournaments, improvement requires a mix of focus, hard work, and the right tools. As a Level II IPTPA instructor and Selkirk paddle rep, I’ve seen firsthand how consistent effort and intentional practice can transform your game. Here are five ways you can challenge yourself and level up in 2025.

1. Set Clear Goals and Track Your Progress

What gets measured gets improved. Start your year with a plan: What specific skills or milestones do you want to achieve? Maybe it’s improving your third-shot drop consistency, adding power to your serve, or stepping up a level in rec play. Whatever it is, write it down and track your progress.

Use tools like a pickleball journal, video analysis, or apps to measure improvement. Break larger goals into smaller, actionable steps to keep yourself motivated. For example, if you want to master the third-shot drop, focus on practicing it three times a week by finding a drill partner. Progress might be slow, but remember, “time on task over time delivers results!!!

2. Drill, Baby, Drill!

It’s not glamorous, but drilling is the secret sauce for consistency and confidence on the court. Rember: Repetition Creates Recognition! Recreational games are fun, but focused repetition during drills is where real improvement happens. Dedicate time each week to hone specific skills like dinking, resetting, and volleying.

Drilling doesn’t have to be boring! Grab a partner or join a group that’s equally committed to improvement. Rotate through different drills or create mini-competitions to keep things engaging. Remember, the best players in the world spend more time drilling than playing – and that’s no coincidence. Check Playtime Scheduler for drill sessions at our local Rockport Pickleball courts!

3. Get Help From a Qualified Teacher or Coach

I totally understand that this sounds self serving but, nonetheless, it is true! Even the most experienced players need a fresh set of eyes to point out areas for improvement. A skilled coach or instructor can identify gaps in your technique, suggest tweaks, and push you out of your comfort zone. As an IPTPA instructor, I’ve seen how small adjustments can lead to big breakthroughs for players of all levels.

Consider signing up for lessons, attending clinics, or even joining a coaching program. Learning new skills and techniques, court positioning or simple doubles strategies from a qualified coach is an investment in your game – and it always pays off.

4. Expand Your Tactical Knowledge and Mindset

Pickleball isn’t just about hitting the ball – it’s about playing smart. Developing your tactical knowledge can give you a massive edge, especially against equally skilled opponents. Study strategies like stacking, court positioning, and exploiting your opponents’ weaknesses. And don’t forget to practice the mental side of the game: focus, resilience, and adaptability.

Watch high-level matches to see how top players manage the game. Take notes on their decision-making and positioning. Then, apply those lessons to your own play. Pickleball is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one, so sharpen your mind as well as your skills. As I watch players during our Rockport Pickleball rec play sessions there are so many little things that can make a huge difference in winning or losing that have nothing to do with how someone hits the ball. These are low hanging fruit opportunities to improve!

5. Take Advantage of the Latest Technology

The right paddle can make a world of difference in your game. In 2025, paddle technology continues to advance, offering better control, power, spin, and durability than ever before. As a Selkirk paddle rep, I’ve had the chance to test some of the best paddles on the market, and I’ve seen how they can help players perform at their peak.

If you haven’t updated your paddle recently, now’s the time to explore your options. Look for paddles that match your playing style and skill level. For example, Selkirk’s Vanguard and Halo lines offer cutting-edge features that enhance spin, control, and responsiveness. Investing in a quality paddle is one of the easiest ways to elevate your game. I always have my demo paddles with me so hit me up and check out which paddle might be right for you and your game!
